Seminar: What has Brexit revealed about EU citizenship as a legal status?

Datum: 27 november 2017 12:00 - 27 november 2017 13:00
Plats: Faculty Room, 8th floor, Juridicum, Stockholm University

This seminar uses Brexit as a “lens” through which the legal nature of EU citizenship and associated rights can be examined. While political negotiations around the rights of EU citizens continue, the presentation aims to focus in more detail on what has been revealed about the content of EU citizenship in legal terms as a result of these processes: about the extent of its guarantees and protection, but about its very real legal limits too. How EU citizenship might (need to) change into the post-Brexit future for the remaining Member States will also be addressed.

Niamh Nic Shuibhne is Professor of European Union Law at the University of Edinburgh. She is one of the Joint Editors of the Common Market Law Review. She was Joint Editor of the European Law Review from 2009-2014, and remains a member of its Editorial Board. She was a Visiting Professor at the College of Europe (Bruges) from 2013-2016, where she introduced the first compulsory course on EU citizenship law. Her research examines questions of substantive EU law from a constitutional perspective, with a particular focus on principle-based analysis of free movement law and of the judicial function. She is currently working on the legal framework guaranteeing equal treatment for EU citizens.
